Microsoft has revealed more news about the “Halo for Xbox One” project we saw teased at last year’s E3 media briefing. The next Halo game is officially titled Halo 5: Guardians, with the release being Fall 2015…
In the past, “Halo” games have pushed the Xbox forward, showcasing the console and its ecosystem in entertaining and innovative ways. Making a “Halo” game that runs at 60 frames per second, on dedicated servers, with the scope, features and scale we’ve been dreaming of for more than a decade, is non-trivial. It’s a task that we, at 343 Industries, are taking very seriously to ensure we deliver the “Halo” game that fans deserve, and a game that is built from the ground up for Xbox One.
…which means there’s still a Halo void to be filled by Microsoft for this fall. Lately, there have been rumors about a Halo 2 Anniversary Edition coming out for Xbox One this fall. With Microsoft announcing this news about 3 weeks before their E3 Media Briefing, they must still have some cards in their sleeves to play. My guess is a Halo 2 Anniversary edition is one of them.
In a Q&A posted on GameSpot, a look at the power behind Microsoft’s Azure cloud servers revealed that it has the power to potentially offer Backwards Compatibility on the Xbox One.
“The Xbox One taps into the power of the cloud quite a bit. We’re seeing one of your competitors, Sony, doing backwards compatibility through streaming. Does the cloud-powered nature of the Xbox One leave it open for things to change in the future for something like that?
Yeah, absolutely. That’s one of the things that makes [the cloud] at the same time both totally interesting and hard to describe to people. Because what the cloud can do is sort of hard to pin. When you say to the customer, we want the box to be connected, we want developers to know that the cloud is there. We’re really not trying to make up some phony thing. But there are so many things that the servers can do. Using our Azure cloud servers, sometimes it’s things like voice processing. It could be more complicated things like rendering full games like a Gaikai and delivering it to the box. We just have to figure out how, over time, how much does that cost to deliver, how good is the experience.”
In addition to this aspect of the cloud servers, topics on Kinect and privacy issues are brought up. Take a read over at GameSpot
